Hogs of Destiny: A History

Leadership

  • November 2004 - Hogs of Destiny is formed by Brock Sampson, Mr Salieri, Playboy.
  • 2005 - Calatan took over as leader and committed himself to making the clan the best at everything in the game, which at that point was very little. The clan mission statement was "VIOLENCE, SEX, & DRINKING. For Glory and Honor, we pursue these activities with utmost zeal". This was typical Calatan style. "Violence" referred to PvP and clan warfare, "sex" referred to recruitment and social interactions, and "drinking" for some reason) referred to assisting new players with learning the game. Meat was given out monthly based on high PvP ranks and the amount of help each member provided to the clan. After 6 months of being a good clan member, Calatan would give you a Mr. Accessory. Some of the more amusing rules in the clan included, "Don't recruit people with stupid names or #'s in their names." Although this is all a bit over the top, HoD continues to be a clan filled with players that are older, hedonistic, elitist, and very competitive.
  • In the summer of 2005, ascension rolled out. Calatan was obsessed with the ascendingest clan boards. He sent mass kmails to invite new players into the clan. Meat incentives were provided to players who completed more runs than the clan average. As long as you continued to ascend and be active, you were considered a member. Side-clans were made that included Boars of War, which was composed of players who focused on PvP, HoD Retirement Home, which was for powerleveling players so that we would have a clan on the powerful clan boards, and Piglets of Fate, which was for players with lower ascension counts that could be brought into HoD as soon as they were about the clan average in number of ascensions.
  • It was at this point that our clan bot was created. CDMoyer, who would later leave HoD and be hired by Jick to work on KOL, developed the bot from a retired account named Searon. Searon had a variety of functions including combining chat between HoD and PoF using a second bot in piglets named Hogbot, recording chat and keeping track of how often member chatted, and posting clan leaderboards. The bot was thus used to help assess the value of each clan member and monthly rewards were based on these measures of value.
  • In the summer of 2006, Blackbelt02 orchestrated a merge between The Courtyard and The Hogs of Destiny. The Courtyard was originally run by Snovak and Sweet_Jesus. Snovak left the game to pursue his career as a male model and Sweet_Jesus became inactive, but many current members of HoD, including Moldar and WhiskeyJack were originally in The Courtyard.
  • The Hogs of Destiny got a lot of attention when KOL radio DJ schmedy created HoD radio. Several members of HoD, including Blackbelt02, redpot, Darthdud, and Lucspace were DJs. Darthdud's guide to softcore runs also gave the clan notoriety.
  • Calatan continued to require monthly dues, but they supported a monthly clan raffle with 5-6 Mr. A quality items and then another set of meat prizes. The odds of winning were fairly good. Ticket costs depended on member activity, number of ascensions that month (more for hardcore), amount of chatting, and forum posts. Calatan paid for these raffles through an investment fund called Piggy Bank, exploiting meat bugs, getting rich retired players to give him their inventory, and playing the MMG.
  • In the summer of 2007, NS13 was implemented. It had a very negative impact on the clan. Many top players lost interest in KOL and quit. Others gambled away their account on the MMG. The clan dwindled and Calatan handed over leadership to WhiskeyJack in November.
  • WhiskeyJack changed a lot of the clan policies. Piglets of Fate was reactivated and recruitment was done into PoF rather than HoD. After moving up the ranks in piglets, you would eventually graduate to HoD. Hog ranks were changed and split into suits, where diamonds are speed ascenders, clubs do PvP, hearts plan social events, and spades investigate game mechanics. This diversified the clan because there was no longer such a heavy emphasis on ascension. A council was also formed to help manage the clan and it's activities.
  • 2008 was also a year full of improvements to the clan. After the host of the clan website crashed and was unable to restore the back-ups for the site, psy found a new host, which is the current website. HoD also started a new investment fund called Baconmeat, headed by jasejasejase2. Through just trading, jasejasejase2 was able to turn 1.7 billion meat invested 2.2 billion in just 4 months. Profit all went to the investors in the clan and the process was repeated several more times. salticid wrote a guide to Badmoon ascension which got a lot of attention from newer players interested in hardcore speed. Frita Bandita created clan bot called psychedelicfish, which keeps track of the stash and clan chat.
  • 2009 was a difficult year for HoD. More players lost interest in the game. Many retired. Rudd joined IP, StrapOnSally joined NO, and tivolimom joined AFH. Piglets of Fate was largely abandoned by HoD. Players were bored with PvP, lucre was a major turnoff to players interested in speed, and the strategic choices in softcore were limited because of the high number of pulls available. In October of 2009, after getting married to Garnet_Rene, moving to a new house, and getting a new job, WhiskeyJack gave leadership to salticid. Meanwhile, PoF had a strong recruitment year and made their presence known in the clan dungeons by being first on the Most Biggest Shows Put On. They also held an event to cheer up a clan-mate called the FUCK (For Ultranibbles Contest, Kickass!) which lead to being first on both the Most Slimy Eyeballs and Most Slimy Teeth boards.
  • 2010 was a year filled with heartiness and collaborative efforts. RoyalTonberry wrote a guide to simple 4 day hardcore runs that was used widely. RoyalTonberry also helped develop the spading forums to gather data and better understand game mechanics with the help of members of AFH. Darthdud collaborated with members of HCO and AFH to put on a monthly radio show about ascension called the Diamond Radio Show (DRP), which has also been widely popular. salticid helped clan members get the Primitive Radio tattoo, Demon tattoo, sinister ancient tablet demon name, and hippo ballerina familiar. During Crimbo, Hogs of Destiny and Piglets of Fate collected more Uncle Hobo Cigar trophies than any other clan.
  • 2010 was also the year where Piglets of Fate rose up as a stand-alone clan capable of great feats on their own. Under the leadership of Funktastic and JennyUnderpants, they held a massive ascension contest called SLUTS that was very popular. After the contest, they helped many players get Hodgeman Whacking sticks. Their clan name continues to grace the leaderboards of many clan trophies associated with the dungeons. They held a second FUCK and once again made first place on the Most Slimy Eyeballs and Most Slimy Teeth boards. Many members do regular leaderboard runs and win contests and although most of these players are now members of HoD, they were accomplishing these achievements while they were still piglets. Finally, piglets had the first PigletCon, for which several members met in Maryland to party.
  • 2011 was another great year for our clans. During the skeleton invasion, Hogs of Destiny got more Admiral's hats than any other clan by defeating many, many skeleton hoards. During the Halloween event, with the help of AFH and Black Mesa, we collected the most popped collar trophies. We also tied for first place with Otari for the fastest Haunted House runs. Last, but not least, Funktastic officially became the leader of The Piglets of Fate.

Speed

  • In the summer of 2005, ascension rolled out. Hogs were among the first to ever ascend. They include Moldar (64th), (Tutori, 86th), and WhiskeyJack (95th). At first, the clan was focused primarily on the clan ascendingist board, but it naturally followed that to be on that board, players not only had to ascend regularly, but make daycount of individual runs be short.
  • The introduction of the iceberglet in February of 2006 also allowed for the first 1 day softcore runs. jonbly was the 3rd player to perform this great feat. In August, a large group of players attempted to do 1 day Teflon runs over Feast of Boris and 5 of the 7 who made it were hogs. They included salien, KnightOfTheRound, Sloth Rop, jasejasejase2, and DarthDud. The same year, StrapOnSally became the 5th player to complete a 2 day hardcore run.
  • In 2009, mftns became the first player to break the 2 day SCNP barrier. Challenge runs were introduced in 2010. Ultranibbles won a gold star for the fastest hardcore Bees Hate You run during the challenge period and 15 other challenge path rewards were given out to hogs and piglets for Bees Hate You runs. Another 15 challenge path rewards were given out to hogs and piglets for Way of the Surprising Fist runs. The year ended with Ultranibbles breaking the 2 day HCNP barrier.

  • Hogs of Destiny is in the top 10 for clans with DCs with the most total items

Collaboration

  • In 2007, the clan pooled resources into an account called The Hogs of Destiny and were 13th on the Friends of Hangk plaque in the town museum. They also paid an artist to draw a portrait of the clan.
  • In 2008, members of HCO, NO, and HoD formed Random Dungeoneers United for taking the top spot on the Hobopolis leaderboard with a 22-participant clan dungeon dive.
  • 2008 was also the first year Hogs of Destiny clans were formed outside of KOL. Calatan forms clans in FallenSword and Guild Wars which included many KOL regulars. Later, Calatan would form Hogs of Destiny Clans for Lord of the Rings and Stars Wars: The Old Republic. In addition to these games, the clans have played a variety of online games together including Settlers of Catan and isketch. Contests within the clan are held regularly, including trivia, cooking contests, photo contests, and random meat spin.
  • In 2010, meow organized a massive project to be complete the fastest possible slime tube run. The run was based on high weight limit of the Stocking Mimic and the ability of the Tiny Costume Wardrobe to change the Mimic into a Purse Rat. After months of planning and many millions of meat, the plan failed because the mechanic worked unexpectedly. Despite this failure, meow did complete the fastest slimetube run on a 2nd attempt that did not include this method.
  • During Crimbo 2010, HoD completed the most Crimbopolis runs of any clan and are #1 in cigar trophies. PoF is #2 in cigar trophies.
  • 2010 was also the year of the fax network project, a collaborative effort between HoD members and AFH to create a system whereby a bot could send copied monsters to clans to reduce the hassle that would normally be involved in using the fax machine. salticid started the project, weas created the bot, Kain hosts the bot, and many other HoD members contributed ideas and farmed fax machines to support the project. Faxbot is now available for use by the entire KOL community.
  • In Nov. 2010, the clan was looted by pizza1. pizza1 was a member of the clan before almost all of its current members, apparently only for a short time. He came back to the game and despite nobody remembering him well, was given a regular rank which had stash access. He was an MMG addict and gambled away billions of meat. In order for him to make back what he had lost, he took 3 baios and a grimacite gown from the stash to use as collateral on a loan. He lost, defaulted on the loan, and went inactive again. The clan pooled together donations and were able to buy replacements for the items lost, which belonged to players in the clan. Months later, pizza1 came back to the game, donated, and used the MMG to actually pay back the clan in full for everything that he had taken. None-the-less, he has been blacklisted from the clan.

Exploitation

  • In 2006, Fata Morgana discovered a bug that allowed you to duplicate ice sickles by creating custom outfits that duel wielded them and sticking one in your closet. The clan exploited this bug to duplicate many ice items. Another bug was discovered later that year by noticing that sometimes you could summon more than 1 snowcone during times of daily lag. The servers were not updating properly, so you could do the same thing on separate servers and end up with duplicate items. Darthdud and KnightOfTheRound used this bug on the investment account Piggy_Bank to create many dense meat stacks and Warm Subject certificates by multi-using them. The account got disabled and they had to pay back the clan for everything that got lost. The result of this event was that TPTB implemented a 15 minute login cooldown.
  • In 2007, WhiskeyJack found a bug with the oracle that allowed you gain unlimited turns. He exploited this bug to complete a harecore run of 11,337 turns in 3 days. For this feat, he was given a bugfinder blade. That year, Darthdud also exploited the gluttonous green ghoul's belch to kill the Naughty Sorceress's 3rd form without using a wand. For this, he was given a custom item, the silver sausage. After NS13, redpot discovered a bug that allowed you to increase your total turncount and decrease the ronin counter. Darthdud used this bug to do the first 2 day SC run. Tobias used it to do a 7 day run with 7020 turns. Both redpot and Darthdud received a bugfinder blade for discovering this bug.
  • In 2008, Darthdud found a bug that allowed you to reset all daily flags by kmailing certain items to certain accounts. He used this bug to get an unlimited number of lucre. TPTB were very upset with Darthdud and took away all his lucre. That same year, Ekeinos and salticid found a bug in hobopolis that allowed you to boot someone from the clan during a fight with a boss and get unlimited fights per dungeons. Along with WhiskeyJack and Fuzzy_Monkey, they exploited this bug to get an endless supply of consumable boss drops.

Sexiness

Violence

  • Combining strong and often eccentric personalities will eventually lead to fighting. The clan has certainly seen its share of epic battles. The first memorable one was between Dvmaprezson and tivolimom. Eventually, the decision was made that one of them had to leave the clan and Calatan chose to boot Dvmaprezson. tivolimom and lucyspace both had big fights with blackbelt02, who constantly gloated about his ties to Calatan. At one point he told tivolimom that he wanted to shove a dildo down her throat to shut her up. blackbelt02 was eventually booted, but tried to come back years later using a multi named Savior. redpot recognized his tone and called him out, at which point he admitted to trying to get back into the clan under a different name. He was again booted. meow and yangdemei had some fights that lead to the two of them being temporarily separated by putting yangdemei in piglets and taking away meow's whitelist to piglets.
  • One of the stranger clan controversies involved a player named Birdy. Birdy had a whitlist to HoD and spent a lot of time chatting in the clan. His sense of humor was very different than the rest of the clan and he "creeped out" some people. He harassed the females in the clan in various odd ways. For example, he asks tivolimom if she would sleep him and she said she couldn't because he was not Jewish. Birdy then became obsessed with circumcisions and would repeatedly ask her if there was any way she would change her mind. He was eventually booted after making an off-color remark to mlady_leander.
  • Another amusing event that involved many HoD members occurred in the game Fallensword. Clans were allowed to have a clan avatar and in typical Calatan-style, our HoD avatar included this photo. In a few days, the forums had a dozen pages of complaints, to which our clan argued for anti-censorship. The game creators finally told Calatan he had to take it down and he replaced it with this photo from a bachelor party - that is the crotch of Cal and his brother. Again, players of the game were furious. Some of the players argued that Calatan's latest photo was disgusting because it promoted homosexuality. Many of the people who wanted Calatan to take down the original photo became flustered when they found themselves allied with right-wing Christians afraid that their children might become gay because they saw a photo of Cal's crotch. Again, Calatan was asked to change the avatar. The last one, although not much better than the other two, was considered the most palatable and the controversy died because half-naked girls are fine, but animals and half-naked guys are gross.
  • Two dramas involved account selling. BigGreenBump retired and sold her account to some kid who wanted to stay in the clan. He was told to spend time in PoF and eventually disappeared without much problems. Lionelhutz caused a bit more problems. He was seen trying to sell his account and was booted. He did not end up selling his account, but has repeatedly asked to come back to the clan. We have a strict policy on this sort of thing and both he and BigGreenBump are blacklisted.
  • The clan has also been involved in various raids on players in chat and in other clans. Jawbruisers are a favorite and have been used to frustrate new players, cripple the AFH bot, and hit the NPC telling the Crimbo story in 2010. "Operation club" was a plot by some hogs to disable the dungeons of AFH. This was done by killing all the bosses with multis, one of which was a multi of an AFH members that they had the password for. This went unnoticed for a few days, but some new players were upset because they could not use the dungeon during an ascension. Some AFH members also became upset after they noticed what happened, leading to blacklisting of certain HoD members involved.
  • During the 2011 Halloween event, Senam's Provocable Nice Guys challenged The Hog of Destiny to get the most popped collar trophies. We received a warning on the KOL forums for making fun of their name by calling them "semen's". We also started a forum thread featuring photos of ourselves with popped collars and jawbruised them while they trying to coordinate speed runs. We eventually made the clan member spearheading the attempt to beat us say that she the event had "left a terrible dent in my faith in people here as a whole". Semen jokes, jaw bruisers, and popped collar pics are apparently beyond the limit of decency for some people. We also absolutely crushed them in popped collar trophies thanks to many players who came to support us in our war against the Semen.
